NEW YORK (NewsNation) — A man’s attempt to attack a couple walking their dog down a New York City street quickly backfired when the pair turned the attack around.

Surveillance video shows the 37-year-old assailant trail behind the couple as they strolled down the street in Queens around 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, the New York Post reports. Then, he’s seen tossing his coat on the ground before he tries to ambush the other man, who was riding a scooter due to a foot injury, alongside the woman and the dog.

The assailant starts punching the man in the back and head but within seconds, the man ducks and twists turning the tables on the assailant by grabbing him by the neck and unleashing a flurry of punches.

The woman also fights back, and the assailant ends up on the ground. He eventually wrestles free from their grip and the woman is heard in the video shouting at him to “back up.”

Bystanders who watched the incident unfold eventually stepped in to separate the trio.

As he approaches the security camera, blood can be seen coming from the back of the aggressor’s head. Police said he was stabbed several times and is in the hospital in critical but stable condition.

It’s unclear if this was a random attack or if the people involved knew each other. So far, no arrests have been made.

While the investigation into this incident continues, it comes on the heels of another apparent random attack near Times Square.

A mom of five from Pennsylvania was stabbed in the chest while leading a class trip. She wasn’t seriously injured. In this case, the assailant had a long criminal history and lived in a nearby shelter, police said.
