MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A 40-year-old Mexican national who was convicted in 2014 of killing two children in a crash will be deported after being taken into custody during a traffic stop in Meriden, Connecticut.

Israel Alejandro Gonzalez-Arcinego was arrested on May 1, according to an announcement on Monday from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Gonzalez-Arcinego was convicted in 2014 of two counts of manslaughter, along with driving under the influence and other crimes, in connection to a crash that killed two children. He was sentenced to a year in prison and five years of probation.

However, after a judge ordered for him to be deported in 2015, the Connecticut Department of Corrections released him without notifying ICE, according to the announcement.

“Israel Gonzalez was convicted of driving under the influence and killing two Connecticut children,” Enforcement and Removal Operation Boston Field Office Director Todd Lyons said in a written announcement. “His actions shattered a family. We cannot allow unlawfully present convicted felons to victimize the residents of our communities. ERO Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by apprehending and removing egregious offenders like Mr. Gonzalez from our New England neighborhoods.”
