NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) – British chef Gordon Ramsay revealed in a video on Instagram Saturday that he was in a bad bicycling accident in Connecticut earlier this week.

“This week, unfortunately, I had a really bad accident and it really shook me,”  said Ramsay in his video. “Honestly, I’m lucky to be here.”

In the video Ramsay lifts his trademark chef’s apron to reveal a massive purple bruise going up the side of his torso.

Ramsay credits his survival to the medical staff at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London and to wearing a helmet.

“Now for those incredible trauma surgeons, doctors and nurses in the hospital who looked after me this week… They were amazing but honestly? You’ve got to wear a helmet,” said Ramsay. “I don’t care how short the journey is.”

The post was to commemorate father’s day, which is this Sunday. The chef encourages all fathers to be safe. You can find Ramsay’s original post here.
