(NewsNation) — Police have found human remains in a wastewater collection point near the apartment of missing Texas college student Caleb Harris.

Authorities said the remains are in the custody of th e medical examiner but it may be some time before they are identified.

What happened to Caleb Harris?

Caleb Harris, a Texas A&M Corpus Christi student, was last seen on March 4, 2024. He spent the evening playing video games with his roommates and doorbell footage showed Harris and a few other people playing with a puppy shortly after midnight.

Harris told one of his roommates, who was heading to bed, that he planned to order snacks from Uber Eats at 2:20 a.m. Texts and social media messages showed him walking the puppy in the area near his apartment.

At 3:20, Uber Eats delivered his snack order, leaving it outside the apartment door.

Harris was reported missing at 11 a.m. after his roommates noticed the order still outside the door and his truck still in the parking lot. Harris’ cell phone was missing, but his wallet and keys were in the apartment.

Searching for Caleb Harris

Corpus Christi police say the investigation is active and ongoing. A number of suspects were ruled out, including the Uber Eats driver, his roommates and the friends he was texting.

The search for Harris included local authorities, his family and friends and other organizations, including the U.S. Coast Guard and Texas Search and Rescue.

They found no sign of Harris. Police said there is no evidence of foul play but have not ruled it out because of the lack of evidence overall. The search area included the area around the wastewater well where the remains were found, which police say was searched multiple times.

Human remains found

A city worker found the remains in the 40-foot-deep well and alerted police on Monday. The well, which acts as a wastewater collection point, was drained and the Corpus Christi Fire Department’s Hazmat team retrieved them.

The remains were described as being in an advanced state of decomposition and the age and gender of the person have not been determined.

Authorities say they can’t say how the remains came to be in the well, raising the possibility that they were flushed there from another location after recent heavy rains. It’s also unclear how long they were in the well before they were discovered.

It’s also unclear whether the remains were the result of foul play or an unfortunate accident.
