TEXAS (KXAN) — Nearly 400 trained disaster workers deployed to Texas to aid in the aftermath of now-Tropical Storm Beryl. Beryl landed as a Category 1 hurricane along the Texas coast early Monday, washing over the coastal and Houston areas and leaving millions without power.

Hundreds of disaster workers flocking to the Texas coast join several emergency response vehicles, thousands of relief supplies and shelf-stable meals provided by the Red Cross, per a Monday release.

Red Cross officials reported 125 people stayed in seven evacuation shelters as they braved the storm’s onset. Officials added the organization has been collaborating with area emergency personnel and community organizations to aid in shelter and relief work.

“The Red Cross has been anticipating and preparing for Beryl for nearly a week, and we’re honored to stand alongside our government and community partners to support Texans now,” said Brad Kieserman, vice president of Disaster Operations and Logistics for the American Red Cross, in the release. “Collaboration among disaster responders is more critical than ever as the continuous pace of extreme weather continues to worsen and shortens the time we have to prepare for major storms.”
