WASHINGTON (NewsNation) — Former President Donald Trump is blasting reforms reportedly under consideration by the Biden administration that would make major changes to the U.S. Supreme Court, including term limits for justices.

“The Democrats are attempting to interfere in the presidential election, and destroy our justice system by attacking their political opponent, me, and our honorable Supreme Court,” Trump, who appointed three Supreme Court justices, said on his social media site Truth Social.

Biden’s Supreme Court reform proposals

President Joe Biden has long resisted calls to reform the high court, but growing discontent among Democrats about recent opinions and ethics controversies has him reconsidering.

According to the Washington Post, Biden is expected to announce his support for a Supreme Court overhaul in the coming week. The president plans to support establishing term limits for justices and to call for a constitutional amendment to end presidential immunity as well as immunity for other officeholders, per the report.

The reforms also propose an enforceable ethics code for justices, among other changes.

What’s driving the proposal?

The potential changes to the judicial system come as Democrats grow increasingly angry over multiple high-stakes rulings and ethics scandals involving Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.

Since Biden was elected, the Supreme Court has made several landmark decisions, including overturning Roe v. Wade, ending affirmative action in college admissions and killing Biden’s student loan forgiveness program.

Most recently, the court’s ruling on presidential immunity has sparked anger within the Democratic Party. Biden looked to mobilize voters during the NAACP convention Tuesday.

“The next president of the United States could appoint two or more justices to the Supreme Court. Just imagine. I know the stakes. Folks, my vision for the future will continue to be all about working people in this nation,” Biden said.

Any changes to the high court would need congressional support, which makes it a long shot. Lawmakers are working on bills to create term limits and deal with ethics concerns.
