(NewsNation) — Former President Donald Trump did call and speak to independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. following the July 13 assassination attempt on Trump’s life, but no deal to join forces was made between the pair, Kennedy told “CUOMO” exclusively. 

The clarification comes after The Washington Post reported Kennedy had floated the idea of joining the GOP nominee’s team rather than staying in the race himself.

“Is it true that you offered, in a phone call with Trump, to get out of the race in exchange for a job in the administration?” host Chris Cuomo asked.

“No, that is not true,” Kennedy replied.

What is true, Kennedy said, is that the pair talked over the phone about unifying the country mere hours after an attempt was made on Trump’s life.

“I’m very, very flattered that he reached out to me. We had a long conversation that night, a couple of long conversations,” Kennedy said. “They were very pleasant. I was very impressed by some of the things he said.

“We talked about a wide range of things. And I’m not going to go into the exact detail because that would violate a trust with President Trump, but there was no agreement made,” the candidate added.

According to The Washington Post, two of the four sources who were familiar with Kennedy and Trump’s conversations said they would not dismiss the possibility of joining forces in the future.

Danielle Alvarez, a Trump spokeswoman, similarly denied the reports, telling the newspaper: “President Trump met with RFK and they had a conversation about the issues just as he does regularly with important figures in business and politics because they all recognize he will be the next president of the United States.”
