(NewsNation) — Sharks off the coast of Rio de Janeiro have tested positive for cocaine, scientists say.

Research conducted by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation tested 13 Brazilian sharpnose sharks taken from shores near Rio de Janeiro and found that they tested for high levels of cocaine.

Experts believe cocaine is making its way into the water via illegal drug manufacturing labs or through inadequate sewage treatment facilities.

A paper published in the journal Science of the Total Environment said being exposed to cocaine could result in severe damage to shark health. However, researchers were unable to discern whether it caused behavioral changes yet.

This is the first study to find the presence of cocaine in free-range sharks, and the possible effects on humans of cocaine being ingested by carnivorous fish is not yet known.

“These findings are indicative of potential human health risks, as sharks are highly consumed in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in fact, throughout the entire Brazilian territory and indeed, worldwide,” the study authors wrote.
