STILLWATER, Okla. (KFOR) — An Oklahoma college student is recovering after she says an unexpected dog attack left her with 100 stitches on her face.

“I’m never going to be the same in my face,” said Cheyenne Brown, an upcoming junior at Oklahoma State University, who was attacked by a pit bull on Tuesday, July 16.

Brown was at her friend’s house in Stillwater playing with the dog, whom she had met before and never had any issues with in the past.

“I was rubbing the dog’s belly and stuff and I stopped and he kind of like stood up and I turned to talk to my friend and I turned back. As soon as I turned to the right, he latched, jumped at me,” she explained.

Brown said she thought it was just a small bite until her friend said otherwise.

“They’re like, ‘Oh, we need to get her to the hospital.’ And I’m like, ‘I’m fine,'” Brown recalled. “And they’re like, ‘No, we got to go. You need to go,'”

Her friend jumped into action and rushed Brown to Stillwater Medical Center before an ambulance took them both to OU Health in Oklahoma City.

She’s expected to recover within six months to a year.

“It does hurt when I eat, like going to eat solid food. I can’t brush my teeth because of the stitches. So that sucks too,” Brown said.

Brown said while she loves animals, she hopes her story will prompt others to be cautious.

The Stillwater Police Department said the dog had not been rabies-vaccinated for two years.

“Officers have remained in contact with the dog owner and are ensuring the animal is following the protocol for rabies quarantine at a licensed vet facility,” the department said in a statement.

Brown said she received a rabies shot as a precaution.

Stillwater Animal Welfare has since taken over the investigation.
