(NewsNation) — Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Wesley Clark says Iran is walking a “fine line” when it comes to how it responds to Israel’s strike in Beirut, Lebanon, on Tuesday, which killed at least one person and wounded dozens of others.

Israeli military officials said the strike was aimed at the senior commander of Iran-backed Hezbollah, who they say was behind the deaths of 12 children during a weekend rocket attack in Golan Heights.

It was not immediately clear if the Hezbollah leader, Fouad Shukur, was hit Tuesday.

What happens next depends on the Iranian reaction, Clark said on “NewsNation Now.”

“My guess is the Iranians don’t want any escalation any more than the Israelis do,” Clark said, adding that it’s not something Israel or the United States wants either.

However, Iran also doesn’t want to give up its leadership of these terrorist groups, he added.

“It certainly doesn’t want to make Hezbollah look weak and lose credibility in the region or in Lebanon, where it’s got a leading role in the government,” Clark said. “So Iran is walking a fine line on this.”
