(NewsNation) — A fugitive nicknamed “The Devil” who was wanted in Ohio in connection with a 2004 killing was taken into custody last week after being found in Mexico, according to a news release from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Antonio “El Diablo” Riano, who was listed as one of the Butler County Sheriff’s Office’s “Most Wanted,” was found in his hometown of Zapotitlán Palmas in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. He was wanted for the shooting death of 25-year-old Benjamin Becarra.

The shooting occurred in December 2004, and Riano allegedly fled the U.S. to avoid prosecution.

The Butler County Prosecutor’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Service and the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs worked with law enforcement partners in Mexico to arrest Riano and extradite him back to the U.S.

When Riano was found in Mexico, he was working as a police officer, authorities said.

U.S. marshals took custody of Riano on Thursday, and he has been transported to the Butler County jail where he remains, pending court proceedings.
