NEW YORK (PIX11) — All three major airports in New York City and New Jersey issued ground stops amid thunderstorms Tuesday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

LaGuardia Airport issued the ground stop at 2:10 p.m., followed by John F. Kennedy Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport at 2:15 p.m.

JFK and Newark airports lifted the ground stops as of Wednesday morning. LaGuardia Airport opened at 6 a.m., according to the FAA’s website.

Delays at all three airports diminished to less than 15 minutes, according to NYC Emergency Management. At least 1,300 flights were canceled and over 970 were delayed at LaGuardia, JFK and Newark.

New York City officials also issued flash flood and travel advisories. Thunderstorms and strong winds drenched the city Tuesday night.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning and severe thunderstorm warning for the Bronx and Manhattan through 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

“Forecasted weather conditions may cause flight disruptions at JFK Airport. Please check with your airline to determine the status of your flight,” representatives of JFK airport wrote on X.

Before the ground stop, delays had reached up to four hours at JFK and around two hours at LaGuardia and Newark, according to the FAA.
