(NewsNation) — The brother of missing woman Ana Knezevich Henao and his lawyer questioned recent court developments in the case against his sister’s estranged husband at a news conference Thursday.
In particular, Felipe Henao‘s attorney Adam Ingber said the last court hearing should have focused on if the defendant has enough money to flee, and his financial situation. Instead, he said, it was centered around evidence.
Ingber said he knows Ana Knezevich Henao’s husband, David Knezevich, received millions of dollars in real estate transactions that he claims he no longer has.
“The case is very, very strong against Mr. Knezevich, and we know that justice will be done,” Ingber said. “We want to focus at this point on the flight risk and these millions of dollars that he has access to.”
The Miami Herald reported that David Knezevich’s lawyers, meanwhile, argue that the absence of forensic evidence showing a struggle between the couple before Ana Knezevich Henao went missing should pave the way for him to be released on bail.
David Knezevich, who is charged with kidnapping in connection to the disappearance of his wife earlier this year, pleaded not guilty to all charges against him in June. David Knezevich was arrested last month when he returned to Miami from his native Serbia.
Ana Knezevich Henao was staying in Madrid, Spain, when she disappeared. At the time, she and David Knezevich had been separated and going through a contentious divorce after 13 years of marriage. The couple had owned a computer support service for South Florida businesses.
Spanish authorities released a video earlier this year showing David Knezevich buying duct tape and spray paint at a Madrid hardware store. Just hours before, he had been seen spray-painting a surveillance camera at his estranged wife’s apartment, police said.
FBI agents and the Spanish national police are investigating, with law enforcement agencies in Serbia and Colombia, where Ana Knezevich Henao is from, also reportedly becoming involved.
With the stress of his sister being missing comes another fear for the family, Felipe Henao told reporters: “retaliation” from David Knezevich.
“It is a lot of anxiety on that end,” Felipe Henao said. “It’s just a very difficult time for the family.”
