SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – A Shreveport man was sentenced in federal court after pleading guilty to illegally possessing a machine gun.

According to the United States Attorney of Louisiana Western District, the conviction of L’Mykal Rashard Hicks, 22, was related to an April 10, 2022, arrest related to a traffic stop.

A news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office said that Shreveport police responded to a report of drugs being sold near the intersection of Coyth and Lynbrook Streets. When officers arrived, they said they saw two vehicles parked at the street’s dead end and were led on a pursuit after an attempt to contact one of the vehicles.

Police said a black pickup truck led police in a chase as it drove through neighborhoods; the driver ran stop signs and only decreased speed for turns. At one point in the pursuit, the passenger, identified as Hicks, jumped out of the vehicle but injured himself in the process and jumped back into the truck, and they fled from the patrol officer again.

Hicks eventually exited the truck, fleeing on foot. Officers engaged in the foot chase said they saw him pull a firearm from his waistband and run with it in his before dropping it to the ground. He got away from the police once again while handcuffed in front of the patrol car. When officers caught him, he was tased, handcuffed, and arrested.

He was charged with possession of a loaded Glock .45 pistol with a conversion device attached, making it a machine gun. He will serve 25 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release.
