Oregon Great Dane nominated for ‘unusual’ pet insurance award
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A local dog from Oregon is in the spotlight for an unexpected reason after receiving a nomination for a national award.
Insurance company Nationwide is recognizing the most unusual pet insurance claims of the year with what they call the Hambone Award.
Skye, a Great Dane from Hillsboro is in the running after he squared up with a weasel in his backyard and lost. Although he was bit on his eyelid and had to go to the vet, he has since recovered, as have all the other nominated pets.
The other nominees include a glue-eating Corgi, a mixed breed who ate more than 250 puzzle pieces, a parrot with accidentally-tangled talons, as well as another mixed breed who reportedly broke through a plate glass door upon seeing the mail carrier.
According to the insurance company, the Hambone Award was originally named after a dog who got stuck in a refrigerator and ate an entire holiday ham while waiting to be freed. The dog was eventually found, with a licked-clean ham bone and a mild case of hypothermia.
If you think Skye had the most noteworthy pet insurance claim, you can vote for him through Nationwide now through Aug. 22.
