SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — It’s the big reveal of one of the most iconic attractions of the New York State Fair, the butter sculpture!

More than 800 lbs. of butter was delivered to the fairgrounds.

Then, sculptors Jim Victor and Marie Pelton began crafting and carving. The finished product was revealed at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning in the dairy products building.

The theme is “Dairy: Good for you, good for the planet.” It highlights many ways that dairy farmers protect the planet while producing milk.

On one side of the sculpture, you’ll see a family relaxing on the bank of a river, and on the other side, a dairy farmer planting a tree.

Every year, dairy farmers plant thousands of trees along rivers and streams. This is to prevent soil erosion, improve water quality, and create habitats for wildlife.

The American Dairy Association said there is enough butter in this sculpture for 76,800 pancakes. The sculpture itself weighs about the same as eight to nine newborn calves.

The first day of the fair is Wednesday, Aug. 21, you can head out beginning then to check out this year’s sculpture.

You can watch the unveiling in the player above.
