(NewsNation) — A 10-year-old attempted to break a mountain climbing record by summiting the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. However, due to a rock fall, they had to descend 1,000 feet shy of the summit.

Sam Evermore and his dad, Joe Evermore, climbed nearly 15,000 feet of the Matterhorn. Despite dangerous conditions, Sam Evermore told “Morning in America” Wednesday that he’s not giving up and is determined to reach the summit and break his second world record.

“I love hanging by my arms in these beautiful places,” he said. “I do want to try it again.”

Mountain climbing carries dangerous risks. Just last week, three climbers died on the Matterhorn, according to Climbing Magazine.

Joe Evermore emphasized that what matters is respecting the mountain, understanding the risks, and following the rules.

“We were very cautious in what we did, he said. “After talking about a mountain for a year and losing sleep over it, and then seeing the summit 1,200 feet away and turning around, that’s hard, but that’s like the difference of life or death on this mountain.”
