PORTER COUNTY, Ind. — Indiana State Police seized more than 120 kilograms of cocaine during a traffic stop Monday morning in Porter County.
According to a news release, ISP’s commercial vehicle enforcement division stopped a semitrailer near Interstate 94’s eastbound scales around 9:30 a.m. for a motor carrier violation. During the traffic stop, an ISP K-9 conducted a free-air sniff near the semi.
The dog alerted troopers that a foreign substance may be present in the semi or its trailer. Police then searched the truck and discovered 123.9 kilograms of a white powder.
The substance later field tested positive for cocaine.
The semi’s driver, 49-year-old Naseeb Chisty, of Canada, was detained and ultimately taken to the Porter County Jail. Chisty has been preliminarily charged with dealing in cocaine and possession of cocaine.
The most serious of the charges — dealing in cocaine — is a Level 2 felony in Indiana, which carries a maximum penalty of 30 years prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
