ST. LOUIS – Just down the street from the Crown Candy Kitchen in the Old North St. Louis neighborhood sits a home for sale that’s hard to miss.

A house made of nine former shipping containers stacked on top of each other, “The Container House,” as its known by its neighbors, is up for grabs at $435,000. This unique home was also recently featured on HGTV’s “Zillow Gone Wild.”

The 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom home has called 2901 N. 14th Street its home since its construction in 2019 that didn’t take long to complete, according to an Old North St. Louis neighbor, Jessica Payne.

“It was the first shipping container home completed in the city of St. Louis, but also for Old North, it was the first home that we had built in quite awhile,” Payne said.

A bright yellow door welcomes guests into the thoughtfully designed home with art, sustainability, and cost-efficiency at the forefront of its design.

Payne says she remembers the day the shipping containers all came in on a crane and truck.

“It was pretty exciting to see coming down the street, there were a number of neighbors outside just watching what was going on,” Payne said.

Small dents and dings can still be seen on the retired shipping containers that were once in use on the Mississippi River.

“I think it was really important for them to incorporate a lot of that history of the neighborhood,” Payne said. “This neighborhood used to run all the way to the river before the highway went through it.”

Aside from its unique build, the second floor of the home features a private covered deck on the second floor in view of the Gateway Arch and a “floating bed,” and up the stairs to the third floor, an art gallery with movable walls.

The home displays two large murals on the exterior walls, with St. Louis-artist Faring Purth utilizing the west-facing wall for a defining art piece. Fresno-based artist Robert Amador’s is featured on the east-facing wall with a colorful mural of a woman and butterflies.

“It really pays homage to sustainability and growth and the strong women in the neighborhood who’ve been caring for it for many years,” said Payne

In regard to it’s cost-efficiency, even as a shipping container home there is insulation, and Payne says it is energy efficient with low electric bills.
