(NewsNation) — A Fort Worth, Texas, father is attempting to take on food insecurity in his district one snack at a time.

Matt Barker, founder of Bread and Fish Ministries, is providing thousands of snacks to multiple schools to ensure students don’t go hungry.

Barker credits God for imparting the idea upon him during a dream, which led him to serve the children of Fort Worth.

“I woke up, and I was just picturing a child eating an apple like a rotten apple, while all the other kids around them had snacks, and I didn’t even know there was much of a need for it,” Barker told “Morning in America.”

“I just jotted down a few notes and set up a meeting with the counselor and the principal the next day. And it turns out there’s a huge need for it.”

According to the North Texas Food Bank, one in seven in North Texas suffers from food insecurity.

Bread and Fish Ministries avoid handing out peanuts due to allergies and try to curb sugary snacks, instead opting for crackers, fruit, bars, and goldfish.

The support for food-insecure children extends beyond school hours in some cases.

“They send home snacks with families so that they get most of the nutrition during the week because they have free lunches.

“So on the weekends, they might be suffering a bit, so they send home snack bags with oatmeal and fruit cups and things like that.”

The majority of donations come from surrounding communities in the Fort Worth area, and without them, Barker admits the initiative “wouldn’t get very far.”

“We started off the first year with one school,” Barker said. “The next year, by the grace of God, we were able to grow to four schools. This is our third year, we already have five schools waiting that need help,

“We need more donations; the more donations to more schools and more kids we can help.”

Barker can be contacted at Breadandfishministries47@gmail.com.
