Harris reveals owning a Glock: ‘Of course’ I’ve fired it
(The Hill) — Vice President Kamala Harris said in a “60 Minutes” interview that aired Monday that she owns a Glock and has fired it at a shooting range in another example of how she and her campaign have made a point to highlight her gun ownership.
“I have a Glock, and I’ve had it for quite some time. And — I mean, look, Bill, my background is in law enforcement. And — so there you go,” Harris told Bill Whitaker during a sit-down with the CBS News program.
“Have you ever fired it?” Whitaker asked.
“Yes. Of course, I have,” Harris said with a laugh. “At a shooting range. Yes, of course, I have.”
Harris has spoken repeatedly about the need to address gun violence, and she has joined President Joe Biden at the White House for announcements about efforts to reduce the number of gun deaths and tighten restrictions on certain gun sales. As a candidate, Harris has called for Congress to reinstate a ban on assault weapons.
At the same time, she has sought to moderate her image on guns ahead of Election Day. She has spoken multiple times about being a gun owner, joking in an appearance with Oprah Winfrey that anyone breaking into her house would be “getting shot.”
Harris’s running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), has also spoken publicly about his transformation from a lawmaker who received an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association (NRA) to a governor who signed significant gun legislation into law after meeting with families of school shooting victims.
Former President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that a Harris administration would seek to take away guns, something Harris has pushed back on.
Trump has spoken annually at NRA events, vowing to protect gun rights and warning of the risks to gun owners if Democrats are elected.
