(NewsNation) — A security guard was shot outside Drake’s Toronto mansion Tuesday, according to police. This comes after weeks of hostile back-and-forth between the Canadian star and rapper Kendrick Lamar.
Hollywood Unlocked founder Jason Lee said Tuesday that he hasn’t heard anyone “claim that the shooting in Canada” was in direct relation to their exchange of diss songs.
“Hip hop is built on being able to trade lyrics that may take jabs sometimes,” Lee said during an appearance on “Banfield.” “I don’t see it as a continuation of exchanges in songs.
“Sometimes music or rap lyrics that are fueled by this back-and-forth creativity, which I would say is art … takes on a life of its own, where people in the community are jumping in and trying to take it on for themselves,” Lee added.
Lee wants to make sure that “we’re not fueling flames that gaslight people to get involved in something that is in music and then turns into something.”
Toronto Police Operations said they responded to a shooting in the area of Bayview Avenue and Lawrence Avenue East at around 2:09 a.m. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle.
Police say they have video of the shooting but are not providing a description of the suspect or the getaway vehicle at this time, Inspector Paul Krawczyk, of Toronto’s Integrated Gun and Gang taskforce, said in a news conference.
Krawczyk said the police “cannot speak to a motive at this time,” and could not confirm whether Drake was home at the time of the shooting.
Police remain on the scene as officers canvass the neighborhood, speaking to witnesses and seeking additional video footage, Krawczyk said.
The area where the shooting occurred is known as The Bridle Path, an upscale neighborhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, comprising multimillion-dollar mansions.
