(NewsNation) — Hazel Thornton, who served as Juror #9 on the first Menendez brothers murder trial, exclusively told NewsNation’s “Banfield” that the outcome of the first trial was a “classic battle of the sexes.”

“The men did not believe that Jose (Menendez) had been abusing his sons,” Thornton said Thursday on “Banfield.”

Earlier Thursday, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said his office plans to reexamine the convictions of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were found guilty of killing their parents in August 1989. The brothers said they acted in self-defense, citing years of abuse, and are hoping the case will be reopened.

Thornton said that if the brothers are tried again, “the outcome would be very different.”

Thornton also said she doesn’t plan to watch Netflix’s new series, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”

“Why would I want to watch a story that doesn’t reflect the truth as I know it?” Thornton said.
