SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Keurig has unveiled a vision for a new form of single-serve coffee.
K-Rounds plastic-free pods, which are created from roasted coffee beans and protected in a plant-based coating, will work in the new Keurig Alta brewer to make a variety of hot and cold barista-style beverages, the manufacturing company said on its website last week.
From a bold espresso with velvety crema to a cup of a hot coffee, K-Rounds come in different sizes depending on the type of beverage. Those pods will be marked with a code that the Keurig Alta brewer reads to know the pressure and extraction profile needed to get the “full flavor, aroma and richness of each coffee variety,” the company said.
“Thirty years ago, Keurig changed the way consumers brewed coffee, with the introduction of the K-Cup pod single serve coffee system,” Chairman and CEO of Keurig Dr Pepper Bob Gamgort said. “Today, we are applying all our expertise to create a revolutionary new system that will redefine how consumers will brew coffee for decades to come.”
Keurig Dr Pepper will conduct beta testing phases starting in early fall 2024 to receive feedback from consumers.
Along with being plastic-free pods, K-Rounds can be disposed of like coffee grounds and are expected to be certified compostable, the company added.
