(NewsNation) —Microsoft has reportedly laid off the entirety of its diversity, equity and inclusion team (DEI), citing their lack of relevance to business operations.

In an email viewed by Business Insider, a Microsoft “team leader” wrote; “True systems-change work associated with DEI programs everywhere are no longer business critical or smart as they were in 2020.”

The report says Microsoft eliminated the team due to “changing business needs.”

In 2020, Microsoft announced plans to double the number of Black and African American leaders in the corporation and suppliers of the same ethnicity. It is presently unclear if they achieved these goals.

A Microsoft representative reiterated the company’s support for diversity and inclusion efforts to Business Insider.

“Our D&I commitments remain unchanged,” a Microsoft spokesperson, Jeff Jones, told Business Insider.

“Our focus on diversity and inclusion is unwavering and we are holding firm on our expectations, prioritizing accountability, and continuing to focus on this work.”

A Washington Post poll in June found 61% of Americans believe it is “a good thing” for companies to invest in DEI initiatives.

Last month, home improvement chain Tractor Supply abolished its DEI programs after public backlash.
