(NewsNation) — An Arizona lawmaker used ChatGPT to help draft legislation on artificial intelligence, a detail he wanted to keep “a surprise” until the bill was signed, he told NBC News.
Arizona state Rep. Alex Kolodin, a Republican, used the AI tool to define “digital impersonation” for a passage in House Bill 2394, which allows prominent figures to receive a court order confirming the falsity of a deepfake.
Arizona’s Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs made the bill a law this week.
“I was really struggling with the technical aspects of how to define what a deepfake was,” Kolodin told NBC News. “So I thought to myself, ‘Well, why not ask the subject matter expert, ChatGPT?’”
The politician said he and other representatives would have caught any potentially inaccurate or harmful information as the bill progressed through what he called a “robust process in the Legislature.”
Hobbs’ office has said the governor didn’t know Kolodin used AI during while drafting the bill, NBC reported.
“I kind of wanted it to be a surprise once the bill got signed,” he told the outlet.
