SAN FRANCISCO (NewsNation Now) – Twitter launched “Fleets” worldwide Tuesday, its own version of expiring 24-hour posts.

Popularized by Snapchat, with Instagram and Facebook jumping on the bandwagon, Twitter is meeting the demand for short-term posts that delete on their own.

All Twitter users will be able to post “Fleets.”

In a tweet, Twitter described them as: “that thing you didn’t Tweet but wanted to but didn’t but got so close but then were like nah. We have a place for that now – Fleets!”

Fleets can’t be retweeted and they won’t have “likes.” People can respond to them, but the replies show up as direct messages to the original tweeter, not as a public response, turning any back-and-forth into a private conversation instead of a public discussion.

You can even set a privacy level, much like Instagram’s “close friends” feature.

People watching your Fleet will be able to react with emojis or send a message.

The news comes the same day Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg faced questions from a Senate Judiciary Committee about how they handled disinformation surrounding the presidential election.
