(NewsNation) — Tax season is underway, and you may be shocked to see how much is taken out in state income tax when you’re filing your 2024 returns. However, nine states don’t have state income tax.
Which states don’t take out income tax?
Here’s a list of states that do not have state income tax:
- Alaska
- Florida
- New Hampshire
- Nevada
- South Dakota
- Tennessee
- Texas
- Washington
- Wyoming
Although these states do not take taxes out of earned income, that does not mean the cost of living is lower. In fact, states may make up for the no income tax in other ways, such as a higher sales tax.
What is the deadline for filing taxes?
Those who are filing taxes have until April 15, 2025, to do so.
This is the deadline each year and has been dubbed Tax Day.
Can I file my taxes past the deadline?
The IRS can grant an extension to file late in some cases. However, you must request that extension by the April deadline. Then, you will have until Oct. 15 to file your taxes.
Those who experienced a disaster in 2024, for example, can apply for that extension. This includes those affected by hurricanes Helene and Milton, as well as individuals and businesses affected by the California wildfires.
Can I file my taxes for free?
Yes, you do have the option of filing your taxes for free. Through the Free File Program, the IRS partners with companies to allow you to submit your return for free, with some conditions. Your adjusted gross income (AGI) has to be $84,000 or less to qualify.
Some companies, such as Intuit Turbo Tax, offer a free version of their services, with some conditions.
