(NewsNation) — It’s that time of year again, and no, not the holly, jolly one.

Tax filing season for 2024 tax returns begins Monday, Jan. 27, and although there won’t be any presents under a tree, there is some cheer knowing the stress is behind you once you’ve submitted a “file.”

Here are some frequently asked questions — and answers you need to know.

When is the first day I can file taxes?

The first day the Internal Revenue Service will begin processing tax returns is Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, which is the official start date of tax filing season.

However, the IRS’ free file program allows taxpayers to submit early, so some people may have submitted theirs as early as Jan. 10.

When is the deadline to file 2024 tax returns?

Tax filers have until April 15, 2025, to file. This is consistently the deadline each year, now adopting the name of Tax Day.

Can I file my taxes late without penalty?

The IRS grants extensions to file late without penalty in some cases. You must request an extension by the April deadline. The extension deadline to submit tax returns is Oct. 15.

People who experienced a disaster can apply for an extension. That includes those affected by hurricanes Helene and Milton in the southeast and individuals and businesses in parts of California affected by the wildfires.

How quickly will I get my tax refund?

The IRS typically processes electronic refunds within 21 days, moving quicker on those who elect to receive their refunds via direct deposit. Those filed by mail generally take longer.

You can track your refund status with the IRS’ “Where’s My Refund” tool.

Where can I file taxes for free?

The IRS offers a Free File Program, partnering with companies to allow tax filers to submit their returns for free, with conditions. Your adjusted gross income (AGI) must be $84,000 or less to file a free federal return.

Some companies, such as Intuit Turbo Tax, offer a free version of their services, with conditions.

What do I need to file my taxes?

You will need a host of documents, including personal information and income. Here is what you need, according to the IRS.

Personal information:

  • Social security number or individual tax ID number
  • Bank account and routing numbers if using direct deposit for refunds
  • Adjusted gross income
  • Refund amount from previous tax return
  • Current address
  • Self-select PIN if you e-filed last year
  • IP PIN if you were a victim of identity theft

Income:

  • Paycheck stubs
  • Bank statements or documents from other payment apps or online marketplaces
  • Checks addressed to you
  • Unemployment payments

What is the minimum income to file taxes?

Anyone under 65 who made $14,600 or more must file a tax return. This is the minimum income requirement for those filing individually. For couples, if both spouses are under 65, anyone making above $29,200 must file. That increases to $30,750 if one spouse is under 65.

However, the IRS notes: “You may want to file a return even if you made less to get a refund of taxes your employer withheld from your pay.”
