(NewsNation) — This year’s tax season begins Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, lasting through April 15.

People filing taxes for income made in 2024 must do so by that April deadline, also known as Tax Day.

Who is required to file a tax return?

Not everyone is required to file a tax return, although most Americans must do so, per Internal Revenue Service income requirements.

Anyone under the age of 65 by the end of last year must file a return or else they may face penalties.

What is the minimum income to file this year’s tax return?

Those filing single should file if their income is above $14,600. Couples filing together have a minimum income requirement of $29,200 ($30,750 if one spouse is over 65 years old).

Anyone above the age of 65 by the end of last year has different minimum income amounts. For single filers, it’s $16,550 and above; for couples, $30,750 if one spouse is under 65; and $32,300 if both spouses are over 65.

However, the IRS notes people can still file taxes if their income is below those thresholds because they can still take advantage of some tax credits and may receive a refund.
