(NewsNation) — Taxpayers have less than three months to file their taxes, and the clock starts now.

The first day the Internal Revenue Service will begin processing 2024 tax returns is Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, which is the official start date of the tax filing season.

The deadline to file last year’s taxes is April 15, also known as Tax Day.

The IRS grants extensions to file late without penalty in some cases. You must request an extension by the April deadline. The extension deadline to submit tax returns is Oct. 15.

People who experienced a disaster can apply for an extension. That includes those affected by hurricanes Helene and Milton in the southeast and individuals and businesses in parts of California affected by the wildfires.
