NEW YORK (WPIX) – One person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting at a New York City subway station during the evening commute on Monday, authorities said.

The shooter was still at large after opening fire around 4:35 p.m., according to police. The shooting happened at the Mount Eden Avenue station in the Bronx.

A 34-year-old man was killed in the shooting, police said at a Monday evening press conference.

A 14-year-old girl, a 15-year-old boy, a 28-year-old man, a 29-year-old woman and a 71-year-old man were injured, according to authorities. A fire department spokesperson told the Associated Press that four of the injuries were serious.

The incident started as a fight on a train and then continued on the platform, police sources told Nexstar’s WPIX.

“People started running off the train onto the platform, and more shots were fired while on the platform. That’s where our victims were shot,” said NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper.

Some of the victims are believed to be innocent bystanders, police said.

“This is not a random act of shooting. We believe this stemmed from a dispute that took place. And we are now looking for the suspect or suspects that are involved,” Mayor Eric Adams said.

Video from television news helicopters showed a subway train stopped at the station and orange evidence cones on the elevated platform. New York City Emergency Management asked the public to avoid the area.

“Expect mass transit disruptions, delays, road closures & emergency personnel near Jerome Avenue & Mt Eden Avenue,” New York City Emergency Management posted on social media.

Fear of violence on the subway system spiked after a string of incidents in recent years, but overall, crime in New York City has been plummeting since a surge at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The number of people shot citywide dropped 39% last year compared to 2022. Killings on the subway system also dropped last year, from 10 to 5.

This is a developing story and will be updated. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
