PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Police are actively pursuing an armed man near a Virginia hospital, prompting a lockdown at the medical facility Monday evening.
A crew member with Nexstar’s WRIC witnessed at least six police officers chasing a man into the woods near the Bon Secours Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg.
Shortly after, an officer approached the crew member and told him there was an armed man on the hospital’s property and asked him to remain in his car for the time being.
Residents in the area were asked to stay indoors, and anyone who sees suspicious activity was urged to call 911. Petersburg Bureau of Police posted a message on its Facebook page at 5:39 p.m., noting that officers were at the hospital investigating a “police incident.”
The facility was still accepting emergency room patients, but police asked community members to avoid the facility unless there was an emergency.
As of 7:55 p.m., no injuries have been reported by police. Information regarding when the lockdown began, or whether the facility is still on lockdown, has not been shared by the department or the hospital.
