CHICAGO — Chicago police are searching for a person of interest in the fatal shooting of a CPD officer in Gage Park early Sunday morning.

On Monday afternoon, police released photographs and a video captured by surveillance cameras showing an individual believed to be connected to the deadly shooting of CPD officer Luis M. Huesca in the 3100 block of West 56th Street while Huesca was returning home from work.

Huesca would’ve turned 31 on Tuesday.

The man can be seen on surveillance footage before 10 p.m. Saturday wearing a black jacket inside a convenience store. About an hour later, the man is seen walking into a different convenience store, this time in a gray jacket with yellow striping.

Then, around 2:40 a.m. Sunday, about 10 minutes before Huesca was found shot, the same person wearing the gray jacket is seen walking down the sidewalk.

Police are not yet calling this person a suspect in Huesca’s shooting death but rather a person of interest. Officers say the individual should be considered armed and dangerous.

Huesca was off-duty, but police say he was found in his uniform, shot multiple times. Currently, it is unclear what led to the shooting, and while police have not confirmed that Huesca was the victim of a carjacking, they did say his vehicle was stolen.

A vehicle matching the description of Huesca’s appears to have been found later Sunday in an alleyway near West 57th and South Mozart streets in Gage Park, but police have not confirmed that yet.

Huesca was killed in the same neighborhood as Officer Andrés Vásquez-Lasso, who was shot and killed while investigating a domestic-related call on March 1, 2023, in the 5200 block of South Spaulding Avenue, also in Gage Park.

On Monday night, WGN News spoke with Vásquez-Lasso’s mother, who said she went to visit Huesca’s mother and that she wouldn’t wish this upon any mother.

Vásquez-Lasso’s mother also said her son and Huesca were good friends.

Officers ask anyone who may recognize the person of interest in Huesca’s killing to contact CPD Area One Detectives at 312-747-8380, or dial 911.

Those with information that could help authorities in their investigation can also leave a tip at CPDtip.com. Tips can be filed anonymously.

A cash reward up to $10,000 is being offered for any information that leads to an arrest.
