MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A couple was arrested after Memphis Police said they carjacked an Uber driver with their infant in the car.

Anthony Bratcher, 20, was charged with theft of property $10,000-$60,000, reckless driving and two counts of evading arrest. Kiara Kidd, 18, was charged with carjacking, child endangerment and employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony for the incident that took place earlier this week.

On August 19, Memphis Police responded to a carjacking incident in the 2500 block of Douglass Avenue.

The victim told officers through an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter that he was driving for Uber and picked up a man and a woman with an infant near an apartment complex near Getwell Rd. and Knight Arnold Rd.

When they arrived at the location on Douglass Ave at 11:44 a.m., the male suspect told the victim to pull to the side of the building and allegedly put a gun to his head. Police say the male suspect then snatched the key fob from the victim’s neck, forced the victim out of the car and fled with the female suspect and infant in the red 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe.

On August 20 at 8:10 a.m., officers found the Hyundai parked inside the Corning Village Apartments located in the 3500 block of Steele Street. It was occupied by three people.

When officers approached the vehicle, they said the driver of the Hyundai, identified as Anthony Bratcher, sped away, disregarding traffic lights and stop signs.

Pratcher drove onto the sidewalk at Steele near Whitney and all three people hopped out of the car, police said.

According to the police report, Bratcher was taken into custody soon after in the wooded area near the car. Authorities say he had the key fob to the Hyundai in his pants pocket.

Investigators verified that the key fob was to the Hyundai and towed the vehicle to the city for processing.

Bratcher was taken to the Violent Crimes Unit for further investigation. While there, he told investigators he had a six-month-old child and that the infant’s mother’s name was Kiara.

Investigators subpoenaed Uber for their subscriber information. Records showed that Kiara Kidd requested the Uber on August 19.

She was taken into custody on August 23. Kidd told investigators that she got the Uber to go to Christ Community so that her baby could get her six-month shot.
