INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a shooting that left one person dead and five others wounded early Saturday morning.

“Acts of violence like this have far-reaching impacts. I am disappointed we are standing here talking about another rare but extremely impactful incident of violence in Broad Ripple,” said IMPD Commander Matthew Thomas.

Law enforcement has confirmed that the shooting happened just before 1:30 a.m. inside Landsharks in the 800 block of Broad Ripple Ave. Authorities confirmed that one person was killed and five others were injured in the shooting. The deceased victim was identified as 36-year-old Timothy Brown Jr.

Emergency responders transported five victims by ambulance to area hospitals, while the sixth victim self-transported to a hospital, according to officers.

“Business owners, community leaders, and officers have gone to great lengths to ensure each night is safe. As we saw tonight, all it takes is one person with a firearm and a bad attitude to ruin the peace and fun that is normally enjoyed by all of our visitors.”

In an update released Saturday afternoon, IMPD reported that 25-year-old Nicholas Fulk was arrested for his alleged role in the shooting. He has been preliminarily charged with murder.

Per a release, IMPD’s real-time crime center detectives assisted with the investigation, utilizing B-Link cameras and automatic license plate readers. The detectives’ efforts helped police identify Fulk as an alleged suspect.

IMPD reported that Fulk was taken into custody around 10 a.m. Saturday in the 1300 block of Murphy Landings Drive.

“Violence in our community is absolutely unacceptable, and we urge our fellow community members with knowledge of tonight’s events to come forward,” stated Thomas.

The Broad Ripple Village Association also released a statement:

Our Broad Ripple community experienced a shooting early this morning inside Landsharks, killing one victim and leaving five others injured. We are saddened by the events that took place inside Landsharks. It is reprehensible that a life was lost, and that several individuals were injured emotionally and physically.

While the BRVA does not have the authority to regulate establishments, we are committed to continue working with business owners in the Village to help support a safe environment for our residents and visitors and will do everything within our power to advocate for those responsible to be held accountable.

Security measures and operating procedures that keep staff and patrons safe are critical. The majority of the bars in the Village are committed to and have put recommended safety procedures in place.

We stand ready to continue working with the mayor, prosecutor, IMPD, and both city and state legislators to take a stand against violence and implement effective solutions to create a safe and peaceful environment for our residents, visitors, and businesses.

Jordan Dillon, BRVA Executive Director

IMPD Chief Christopher Bailey also released a statement on the incident, emphasizing the work of the detectives who helped identify Fulk as a suspect.

Early this morning, a deeply disturbing incident unfolded inside a local establishment in Broad Ripple resulting in six people injured, including one life lost. The victims and all of those impacted by this troubling incident are on our minds and in our hearts.

Today, just hours after the incident, IMPD arrested 25-year-old Nicholas Fulk on a preliminary charge of murder. Detectives used technology, including public and private safety cameras, B-link cameras, automatic license plate readers and some good old-fashioned police work to track down the suspect. I am thankful to the officers and detectives whose dedication ensured the suspect is no longer free to victimize our community.

The IMPD cannot control security protocols at individual establishments or determine what promoters are allowed to hold events. What we can do is continue to work our Broad Ripple safety plan and have conversations with business owners to provide suggestions to help make the village as safe as it can be.

However, the responsibility to provide a safe experience inside these businesses relies on the individual managers and operators. While the majority of establishments in Broad Ripple, including bars and restaurants, adhere to the to the agreed upon community standards, some do not and should be held accountable. It takes all of us working together to provide safe communities for all.

It is also important to stress personal responsibility and who is truly to blame for this cowardly shooting — the suspect. He made a choice to pull the trigger, killing one of our neighbors, injuring five others, and traumatizing many more.

I want to commend the swift response of IMPD Broad Ripple Entertainment Zone (BREZ) and district officers who were steps away from this incident when it occurred and provided immediate aid to the victims, including using chest seals and tourniquets.

The IMPD has a longstanding commitment to collaboration with the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA), community stakeholders, policymakers, and with the owners and operators of local establishments to ensure safety in the Village and throughout Indianapolis.

IMPD Chief Christopher Bailey
