(NewsNation) — Job scams reported by consumers jumped 118% in 2023 and the trend is holding steady in 2024, according to a new report from the Identity Theft Resource Center.
ITRC believes the scammers typically make professional-looking profiles, fake websites for both phony and legitimate companies and impersonate real employees to lure in victims.
The scams typically happen via online job search platforms such as LinkedIn, with the scammers asking for applicants’ personal information such as Social Security number, driver’s license pictures and address during the interview process.
“It wasn’t until after the victims shared their information and either did not hear from the company immediately after hearing from them very regularly or were asked to provide login information to ID.me that they became suspicious and contacted the ITRC,” the report read.
The agency believes AI is “almost certainly” at the center of these scammers’ refined pitches and messaging skills. The leap in job scams is on par with scams overall, as Americans lost a record $10 billion to fraud in 2023.
That’s 14% higher than 2022’s losses, with investment scams accounting for roughly half of money lost. In total, more than 690,000 people were tricked into giving money to fraudsters in 2023.
“Digital tools are making it easier than ever to target hard-working Americans, and we see the effects of that in the data we’re releasing today,” Samuel Levine, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in a statement.
