KANSAS CITY, Mo. (NewsNation) — A couple who were trampled during the Kansas City Super Bowl parade shooting told NewsNation’s “Elizabeth Vargas Reports” that they were lying on their backs and covered in bruises moments after the chaos erupted.

“I was laying on the ground; back to the cement, bruises, scratches, everything,” said Dani, who was attending the parade with her partner, Caleb.

“I honestly thought it was not real,” said Dani. “I got up, and I looked around. I was looking for (Caleb). I saw our jacket, I saw our cooler, I saw our belongings. I picked them all up, and I looked around, and I actually didn’t think it was real. I literally did not think it was real. And I started screaming his name, ‘Caleb! What’s going on?’”

Caleb told NewsNation that during their separation, a good Samaritan came to his rescue when he was also knocked to the ground.

“There was somebody running towards me, and he grabbed me,” said Caleb. “He grabbed me and said, ‘Let’s go. Let’s go and leave right now. You have to run.'”

One person was killed and at least 22 had gunshot injuries after shots were fired during the parade.

Children’s Mercy Hospital is treating 12 patients from the rally, 11 of whom are confirmed to be children. Nine of the patients have gunshot wounds, according to the hospital.
