Karen Read case: Ex-investigator fired by Massachusetts State Police

BOSTON (WPRI) — Massachusetts State Police have fired Michael Proctor, the former lead investigator in the 2022 death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe.

Proctor was originally relieved of his duties just hours after a judge declared a mistrial in the case of Karen Read. O’Keefe’s former girlfriend is accused of hitting O’Keefe with her car and leaving him to die in a snow storm.

In a news release issued Wednesday, state police said Col. Geoffrey Noble accepted the Trial Board’s recommendation to terminate Proctor.

The board found Proctor guilty of unsatisfactory performance and consuming alcoholic beverages while on the job, state police said.

According to a personnel order from state police, the trial board found that in 2022, Proctor sent derogatory and inappropriate text messages to other individuals about a suspect in the homicide investigation while he was the lead investigator. He also allegedly had alcoholic beverages while eating dinner on duty and then drove his state police cruiser.

“My decision to terminate Mr. Proctor follows a thorough, fair, and impartial process,” Noble said in the press release. “I have weighed the nature of the offenses, their impact on our investigative integrity, and the importance of safeguarding the reputations of our dedicated women and men in the State Police. This decision reflects our unwavering commitment to upholding our values, enhancing public trust and ensuring the highest standards of service and accountability.”
