EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A police officer was assaulted on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, while booking a man at the El Paso County Detention Facility, according to a statement from the El Paso Police Department.

Devorise Antoine Newson was in the process of being booked after meeting with the judge; police officers attempted to change the handcuffs on him, but he was resisting. During the struggle, Newson bit the finger of one of the officers. In response, the officer used force to protect himself from further harm.

The injured 5-year veteran police officer was taken to a local hospital. Still, it was determined by medical staff that the portion of the amputated portion of the officer’s finger could not be reattached.

According to EPPD, 37-year-old Newson now faces an additional charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer with a bond of $200,000.
