(NewsNation) — A migrant who entered the U.S. illegally and was given a court date years in the future allegedly shot and wounded a Texas police officer during a domestic violence call in San Antonio on Sunday, officials confirmed to NewsNation.

Jorge Chacon-Gutierrez, a 25-year-old Venezuelan national, died in the shootout with San Antonio Police Department officers, Fox News reported.

Chacon-Gutierrez entered the country in November of 2023, Department of Homeland Security Sources told NewsNation. He was processed and given a court date for his removal proceeding in April of 2026.

Backlogged immigration courts often mean immigrants are given notices to appear with dates years in the future, something that has alarmed those concerned about the border crisis, who note that people are usually released into the country pending a hearing.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said officers responded to the domestic violence call around 3 a.m. in the 1300 block of Patricia Drive and learned that a woman in her 20s had been assaulted by her boyfriend. He said SWAT was on the scene.

“When officers went into the apartment, he was lying in bed with a rifle by his side and he started shooting at the officers. The officers returned fire and exited the apartment. One of our officers was shot multiple times, and she is currently in the hospital,” McManus said while giving an update on the scene.

He added that the SWAT team entered the apartment and found the suspect dead after the shooting, though it’s unclear if officers killed him or if he died by suicide.

Three officers were involved in the initial shooting, and the woman was not seriously injured, McManus said.

Law enforcement discovered that Chacon-Gutierrez was arrested by Border Patrol after crossing illegally into Eagle Pass, Texas, in November 2023, according to Fox News.
