SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – – At 6:40 Tuesday morning, an employee at Millennium Recycling on East 50th Street North called the police, reporting that they had found the body of a baby. Police tell us there are few details at this point. Spokesman Sam Clemens says police don’t know why the infant’s body was at the recycling center or how long the boy had been there.

“We are investigating it. We don’t know what the circumstances are or how the infant ended up there,” said Clemens.

Clemens described the baby as a “full-term infant,” but he was not sure of its exact age. We spoke to Millenium Recycling’s management on the phone. They told us they are “taking care of their employees.” They later released a statement that says, in part…

“We are providing full support to our staff and appreciate the community’s understanding.
There will be no further comments at this time,” Millennium Recycling, Inc.

In other investigations similar to this, detectives focused on tracking down the recycling material near the body to try figure out where it came from. Detectives will also wait for autopsy results, which could take weeks.

“This is the type of investigation that may take quite some time before we’re able to find any answers,” said Clemens.

In 2004, search crews found the body of a newborn baby at a landfill in Nebraska. Lori A. Schultz of Alcester, who was 20, was convicted of second-degree manslaughter. Schultz received ten years in prison.
