(NewsNation) — The verdict in the trial of O.J. Simpson, who jurors in 1995 found not guilty of the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman, sent shockwaves throughout the nation.
Simpson, a football player and actor whose death was announced Wednesday, saw much of his athletic success be overshadowed by allegations he killed Brown and Goldman.

Simpson, who had previously pled no contest to domestic violence charges in connection with Brown, was identified as a person of interest by police early in their investigation. The trial captured attention nationwide and brought up conversations about race, gender, domestic abuse, celebrity justice and police misconduct.
Ultimately, Simpson was acquitted of the killings in a criminal trial but later found liable in a civil suit.
The criminal trial verdict became the subject of public outcry and debate. Reactions were split along racial lines, with a significant percentage of the Black community believing Simpson innocent at the time and white and Hispanic Americans believing he was guilty.
However, this would change in later years, with polls showing most Black people now think Simpson was guilty of the murders.
