(NewsNation) — Gov. Wes Moore, D-Md., believes Kamala Harris is the best person to beat Donald Trump in the 2024 election.

“The support that the vice president has earned … I think that is real,” Moore said Wednesday on “CUOMO.” “This was not a coronation of the VP. She knows she needs the support of not just the delegates. When it comes to November, she knows she’s got to earn it.”

President Joe Biden on Wednesday delivered a solemn call to voters to defend the country’s democracy as he laid out in an Oval Office address his decision to drop his bid for reelection and throw his support behind Harris.

Insisting that “the defense of democracy is more important than any title,” Biden used his first public address since his announcement Sunday that he was stepping aside to deliver an implicit repudiation of Trump. He did not directly call out Trump, whom he has called an existential threat to democracy.

Moore said the president “made the best choice for himself,” meaning the “best choice for everybody.” He said Biden’s decision shows a real sense of integrity that everyone should admire and respect.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
