NEW YORK (PIX11) — Age is just a number. A 93-year-old Upper West Side painter is having her heyday. She has devoted her life to her art and activism. Now, she’s having a solo show next month.
Nancy Brandon, 93, said she is grateful to have had such a long rich life. She said her neighborhood on the Upper West Side is her world now. She hopes to share her art with her community.
To walk into her Upper West Side apartment is like walking into a gallery. Brandon was born in the Bronx in 1930. She studied music and played the harp before she started to paint. She never thought she would be discovered at the age of 93.
Brandon is prepping for her new art show of her life’s work, called “The Accidental Artist – Joy & Cohesion in Black Life.”
Brandon even converts everyday items like shoeboxes into masterpieces. Even her bathroom door is a canvas. Brandon said her paintings reflect her life as a Black woman living in New York City.
Brandon is a regular at their community center and shared a book of her work. She was discovered by Manon Manavi, the Goddard Riverside community arts manager. Thanks to Manavi, Brandon has a show of her life’s work in March.
Brandon does have one of her prints in the Library of Congress. The upcoming show has her excited to finally have a place for people to interact with her art. Brandon’s show will be March 1 through April 15 at the Goddard Riverside Bernie Wohl Center. You can book tickets online here.
