CENTERVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) — An inclusive dance club recently put on a special performance at Centerville High School.
“It’s fun. I like the song, and I really like my friends,” exclaims Dora Walusimbi, who is a dancer in “Dance For All.”
“Dance For All” is made up of Centerville High School students with special needs guided by their peer mentors.
“We just make it as fun as we can. Everyone just learns to dance and does what they can,” says Addie Foudray who is one of the peer mentors.
“It’s really exciting. I’ve never done anything like this. It’s good vibes all around,” says Kylie Wortham who is also a peer mentor.
The club started about two years ago under the direction of Centerville Intervention Specialist Sydney Fowler.
“We started very, very small in literally the south cafeteria. We had to move the tables, and it was like me and maybe six of my kids and a couple of the Centerville dancers. We started just by literally doing Zumba songs and dancing and just learning basic like right/left,” describes Fowler.
Now, they’ve grown to more than 40 dancers.
“I don’t even know how to describe it because this group has been something, kind of a dream of mine to work towards for a long time,” smiles Fowler.
Performing in front of a crowd at Centerville’s Coed Invitational, they had the crowd on their feet as they hit the floor performing to ‘Dance the Night Away’ from the ‘Barbie’ movie.
“I am so ready to dance,” smiles Alex Holecek. “I’ve been practicing my moves, and I’ll be so ready to go in the gym. And in the gym, my parents will be cheering for me, and they’ll support me.”
“A little bit nerve racking,” admits Trinity Huston. “It was like whoa, but it was pretty fun.”
“Those kids are my whole heart and soul. And to see them get their moment to shine is just amazing,” says Fowler.
The club was inspired by the “Beavercreek All Stars.”
They meet about every other week.
“Dance For All” is scheduled to perform again Friday May 3rd in the Performing Arts Center at Centerville High School.
