RIVERSIDE, Ohio (WDTN) — A kid known as “Super Sammy” is playing the game he loves.

Two years ago, Sammy Jones received a heart transplant. Now, he’s evading defenders on the football field.

He was born with a rare heart condition, one that’s required five open heart surgeries. He received the heart transplant when he was just 4 years old.

Football was an important part of his life while he was in the hospital according to his father Garland Jones. Kortney Sink, Sammy’s mother said that the sport holds the same weight today.

“He went from playing football in the hospital room to out here playing on the field.”

While the tackles aren’t the same, given that it’s flag football, Sammy said it’s still like playing the real thing.

“We get touchdowns, and we get jukes, and we break ankles,” Sammy said.

Sammy’s father is glad to see his son out on the field.

“This is what we hope to wish for all the days and nights and in the hospital all those months. So, it’s beautiful to see it all come to fruition,” Jones said.

Off the field, and beyond the scheduled hospital checkups and daily medications, Sammy is set to graduate from kindergarten soon, with hopes to play soccer eventually as well.
