Teen with Down syndrome performs sideline cheer after squad cut
- Emmie Tallent, 13, was cut from her school’s cheer team in Tennessee
- She still learned the squad’s routine and performed from the sidelines
- Tallent plans to try out again for the team in a few weeks
(NewsNation) — After getting cut from her school’s cheerleading team, a Chattanooga, Tennessee, teen with Down syndrome went viral for performing the routines from the sidelines.
Although she was cut from the team, Emmie Tallent’s mom, Lisa, said the 13-year-old didn’t let that stop her from performing.
“She loves it so much. She was really sad; we were sad for her, but she has such a good spirit. She bounced right back and just went ahead and cheered anyway,” Lisa Tallent said.
In an Instagram video, posted by Emmie Tallent’s older sister, she matched the squad’s moves while they performed inside a gym at their school. As the cheerleading squad performed, Emmie Tallent proved she could dance the whole routine off the court.
“She has a ton of confidence, and I’ve always wanted to have that. I figured if I videoed that and shared it, maybe other people would be inspired by her craziness and her bravery. So, that’s why I chose to video it and post it,” said Emmie Tallent’s older sister, Sydnee Tallent.
Lisa Tallent said her daughter previously made the squad and the team encouraged Emmie to try out again next year.
“They were really supportive of her. She did make it one year and she had a little more difficulty at practice kind of staying on task,” she said. “So they encouraged Emmie to work really hard on her listening skills and sharpen up those cheer moves and to try again and she’s going to hear in just a few weeks.”
Emmie Tallent said she’s excited to try out again.
