Male cancer deaths, cases to rapidly increase by 2050: Study

Researchers expect a 93% increase in deaths from cancer from 2022-2050.

(NewsNation) — An analysis of 30 cancer types has led to a projection cancer cases among men will increase 84% between 2022 and 2050.

The study published in the Journal of the American Cancer Society on Monday predicts there will be 19 million global cases of cancer in men by 2050.

Of those, 10.5 million are projected to die, a 93% increase on the 5.4 million male cancer deaths in 2022. Researchers analyzed the 30 types of cancer and population data from across 185 countries.

Cases of cancer among older men are also expected to more than double by 2050. Six million older men had cancer in 2022, and by 2050, there is expected to be 13.1 million.

Deaths in relation to the older age group are expected to increase from 3.4 million to 7.7 million.

Of the cancer types, lung cancer is expected to maintain its status as the cause of most cases and deaths. That increase is expected to jump by 88%.

Prostate cancer cases in 2050 are expected to increase by 96%, while mesothelioma cancer will jump 105% from 2022.
