BENTONVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Walmart Health has announced its plans to close all its locations and virtual care, according to a news release.

The retail giant launched the health centers in 2019 but said on Tuesday that it learned through managing them “there is not a sustainable business model for us to continue.”

Walmart had 51 health centers in five states and said the decision to shutter them, as well as Walmart Health Virtual Care, was not easy.

“This is a difficult decision, and like others, the challenging reimbursement environment and escalating operating costs create a lack of profitability that make the care business unsustainable for us at this time,” Walmart said.

The company did not announce specific dates for the centers’ closures but said it will share the information when it becomes available. Walmart said employees with the health centers will be eligible to transfer to any other Sam’s Club or Walmart location.

Nexstar’s KNWA/KFTA has reached out to Walmart for further comment and is waiting to hear back.
